Writing a Good Descriptive Essay

Choose a Suitable Topic

A descriptive essay can be referred to as any written work that primarily focuses on providing a description of some given thing, which may be an event, object, situation, or even a person. When writing a paper of this type, it is important you try looking at your topic from a variety of angles and fully cover every aspect of it in order for readers to get a good understanding of the main point or idea. There are various means you can use to help your readers get a clear picture of the thing you are trying to describe.

It is important to structure your paper in a logical manner. This will make it a lot easier for you to get the main point of your paper across. If, for instance, you want to describe a particular event in detail, you should structure your paragraphs in chronological order. By contrast, if you want to describe a person or place, it is advisable to start by providing some general or background information on the subject. After this, you should provide extensive detail about your subject in each of the following paragraphs. What is very important to keep in mind is that the introductory paragraph sets the direction for the entire paper. Hence, it is vital to set out the key idea in a clear and appropriate manner. This will enable readers to fully understand the message you want to convey.

Write Your Essay’s Thesis Statement

Once the above step is complete, you are ready for the next one, which is the creation of a solid thesis statement. This statement should accurately represent the key point of your descriptive essay, of which you will cover every aspect in detail in subsequent paragraphs. Put another way, your thesis statement should set out the aim of your paper. Indeed, you could say this statement establishes the plan upon which you will write your paper.

Brainstorm for Ideas

Create five separate columns on a blank piece of paper. Allocate a column to each of the senses e.g. sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. This table will allow you to organize your thoughts and ideas and to explore various aspects of your topic i.e. the aforementioned senses. To make writing your essay easier, ask yourself if the individual points in your essay give rise or not to any particular feelings. Do your best to develop strong arguments to support your thesis statement. Make use of various literary instruments such as metaphors, similes, epithets, and so on.

When your five-column table is prepared, start filling in the columns with compelling detail to support your central thesis. The items you list can be used for creating descriptions for the main body paragraphs. Remember to start every individual body paragraph with a topic sentence and go on to elaborate on a specific point or idea that links back to your introductory paragraph and thesis statement.

Create an Essay Outline

The idea is that your outline sets out the various points you will cover in the paragraphs of your essay. In most cases, students at high school level are required to write five-paragraph essays while students at higher levels of education can choose the length of their paper themselves. Five paragraph essays generally comprise of an introductory paragraph, three main body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph.

Create a Concluding Paragraph

A concluding paragraph sums-up an entire essay or paper. It should, if desired, reiterate the thesis statement. It is hugely important that a conclusion is clearly-written since this is the last part that readers will look at. Hence, it should make a lasting impression on them.

Review Your Essay

Writing any essay or paper is not especially easy. Consequently, the writer should have a rest when they have written their essay. Take a walk, complete a puzzle, watch a movie, or do whatever helps you de-stress. This will allow your mind to relax and clear itself of anything that is over-crowding it. Then, after a period of rest, return to your text and review it from the viewpoint of a reader.

Once rested, you should re-read your essay again. If possible, imagine a reader has written it rather than you. Do you fully understand every aspect? Is it all reasonable and logical? Are you able to see the main point of the written piece? Do you think the order of the paragraphs is logical? Are any sentences within the various paragraphs confusing? Are there any sections that need to be rewritten?

Pay careful attention to issues such as language usage. Every word should convey its correct meaning since how your reader understands your text depends on this. The more clearly your thoughts are expressed, the more clearly your main message will be delivered. It is important the information you provide on the subject is sufficiently detailed. This is necessary to enable your readers to form a specific opinion or point of view on your topic. Aside from this, it is only solid facts and specific detail that will allow you properly explain why the topic is important and meaningful.

As a next step you should read your entire paper out loud. This helps identify any potential errors and inconsistencies. Additionally or alternatively, ask a family member or friend to listen to you reading and give feedback. Then ask another person to read through your paper with a view to determining whether every aspect has been thoroughly covered. There may be certain points that need clarification or certain detail that has been overlooked.

Last Step

The very final stage involves reading back over your essay once again, which is to say you should thoroughly scrutinize it. Pay particular attention to spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Make absolutely sure your essay is completely free of mistakes. It is worth noting that it is best to eliminate any clichés if any exist. In the event you find any sections are not sufficiently descriptive or are not logical, these will need to be rephrased. Following this, read your essay aloud as often as is necessary to ensure it is perfect and is exactly as you want. Do not forget how useful it is to check your work in detail.
