Violent video games have adverse effects on children as most of them copy scenes from the video games, which depict violence, as they do not comprehend the meaning. A recent issue in the media provides proof that violent games can lead a child to kill. According to the story, a child aged twelve years old led to the admission of his playing partner in a local nursing care after critically injuring him. The people that witnessed the incidence indicated that the boy was wrestling with his counterpart, and he had overpowered his injured friend, but despite his pleas to stop, the boy kept rouging up his friend, which led to his counterpart falling and hitting his head on the ground. This left a small crack on the victim’s head - a clear indicator of the dangers of video games on children. Video games avail both negative and positive effects to human beings. Some of the inherent negative effects include aggressiveness among children, false sense of security that derives from playing the violent video games; lack of remorse and conscious guilt, and other psychological traits that result from the violent gaming. On the other hand, the positive effects of video games include the improvement in hand and eye coordination, improvement of health and at times alertness, and lastly, they help soldiers in practicing for war.
Video games are games found on disks and are played on a computer, playstation or other featured gaming accessories. Many people have access to these video games, although research reveals that mostly people who are well off in society are the ones that are involved in video gaming. The interaction of humans and video games usually happens in many settings, which is facilitated with the portability nature of these video games. Thus, it is asserted that many kids nowadays spent less time on physical activites as they prefer spending their time playing indoor games, which includes video games. Inadvertently, this affects their social skills as they lose touch with humanity, since the video games become their sole priority. This means that children who like video gaming will become more inclined to spend more time on their video games than with their peers; thus, resulting to more of their influence emanating from the video games. Notably, violent video gaming has negative effects on human beings.
This paper explicates the effects of violent video gaming in relation to human behavior.
Firstly, violent video gaming misinforms human behavior regarding violence. Three main points abound under this argument. Firstly, the violent games send wrong information regarding a person’s survival. We notice that violent video games usually depict the characters inherent with several numbers of lives. This misinforms especially the children who like playing video games. The children end up believing that they have a chance to survive in case they are caught up in violence. This is misinformation, because children who are incapable of consent end up being tricked and most of them are injured in scuffles with their friends. Secondly, the violent video games block the children’s minds from reality (Wagner 2).
According to research, children who engage in violent video gaming without the supervision of adults usually end up getting wrong information regarding some scenarios. It is indicated that some scenes, especially where a character is hurt in the video game but still continues to fight, makes the children think that such violence does not avail too much pain as indicated; thus, they end up practicing in real world, and this leads to bad injuries. Thirdly, it is essential to note that most of the heroes in these video games have no remorse for the villains. This is the message that most people addicted to violent video gaming adopt from the video games. Thus, they transfer the behavior to real world and pretend not to care about anything or those close to them (Call 3).
Secondly, violent video games result into an increase in violent behaviors, especially among children. The first point in this context is the behavior depicted by children during the gaming session. Research indicates that children become easily emotional and they feel bad when their opponents beat them in a video game (Bluemke, Friedrich and Zumbach 9). In turn, this promotes the violence between the children, as the one who emerged victorious could be jeering his opponent. Consequently, the children can end up fighting to prove their prowess even outside the video gaming.
The second indication how video games promote violence among children includes the self-concept of aggressiveness. Psychological research undertaken by Bluemke, Friedrich and Zumbach indicates that there are different self-concepts that result from playing a video game that is violent and a peaceful video game (1). Thus, their Implicit Association Test proved that playing of violent video games has a resultant effect of promoting an aggressive self-concept to both adults and children.
The third effect on how video games promote violent behaviors among children is through the physiological arousal and involvement. This point was proved through a research that involved playing non-violent video games and those that had more scenes of violence. The result indicated that children who played violent video games seemed more aroused and were more involved in their game compared to those who played non-violent games (Olson, Kutner and Baer 194). Thus, this translates to real life situations, where children who play violent video games want to be more involved in everything, which in most cases leads to violence.
Violent video games, however, have also a positive effect on human beings, which involves preparation for war and health improvement. Concerning preparation for wars, violent video games have been established as a good way for soldiers to prepare for the violence that they will encounter when in a war situation. Research indicates that the violent video games aid in preparing soldiers as they practice on their alertness and shooting skills.
Secondly, violent video games have being found psychologically beneficial in improving the coordination between the hand and the eye. This coordination is improved through the functions that both the eye and the hands contribute to in the playing of video games. Notably, a person’s eyes have to be fixed on the screen or monitor, while the hands are slightly lower from the person’s face. This calls for a higher coordination, as a person playing a video game cannot have time to look at what button one is pressing.
Thirdly, video gaming has a positive effect on health as it improves the mental alertness of a person. Video games usually have many features and many controls involved. Therefore, for a person to be able to enjoy the video game, it is essential that one focuses on the game entirely and avoid any distractions. In turn, the strictness that a person applies when playing video games can also be transferred to real life.
In conclusion, video games have both negative and positive effects on human beings. Some of the negative effects include the creation of a false sense of security, which emanates from the scene depicted in the violent video games. From these scenes, children and some adults end up believing that a person can work his way out of a tough situation easily, forgetting that real life situations do not have rules of the video game. Secondly, violent video games promote a world of fantasy among the addicts. Thus, some people want to associate what they see in violent video games to reality, which can be detrimental.
It also promotes insensitiveness, which is caused by the cruelty depicted by violent characters in the video games. Another negative effect is the aggressiveness depicted by children. This aggressiveness comes out because the children want to consider themselves as the characters that they view on these violent video games.
However, there are some positive effects as well, and these include helping soldiers in preparing for wars. The violent video games facilitate the soldiers in their preparation by accustoming them to the situation that they will find when at war. The violent video games also promote the coordination between the hands and the eye due to the position that the video games are played that requires much attention and comfort.
Lastly, it is essential to determine the age that a person can be deemed ready to start experiencing video gaming. Psychologists indicate that children should fully be barred from accessing violent video games. This is because the violent video games have more negative effect on them than on adults. Thus, this proves the point that it should be the parents’ prerogative to determine whether their children are mature enough to handle the pressure that comes with indulging in violent video games (Brown 42). However, some quarters advance that it is essential for children to attain the age of 18 before they can be allowed to purchase a violent video game.
