Psychology and Christianity essay

Introduction

Psychology and Christianity has been in long time paradoxical. Though most of the researchers have been demonstrating low confidence in psychological counseling, more of the Christians are pursuing. Most of the Christian counseling centers are emerging offering what most of the people believe as a perfect combination of Christianity and psychology (Johnson, et al 2010). In addition, the Christians who are not in the ministry of counseling turns to psychologist to ensure that they get advice on the way they are supposed to live and on the way to meet their life challenges.

To ensure that they remain relevant, most of the preachers, teachers, writers and the counselors mostly deal with life issues more through psychological way than biblically. Therefore, according to most of the people it is seen that the psychology has tainted the cross of Christ and their jargons has contaminated the word of God.  Therefore, it is important to search the association in both Christianity and psychology that shows how they both viewed in the society.

The religious instinct

According to Johnson et al 2010, once one is born, the brain is not blank but has something that has been written on its slate. These are the information that allows one to interpret reality instinctively. In the brain, there are instructions that have been written on the slate that helps an individual to deal with certain events. These are instincts themselves. Now the big question is if these intuitions got there by the act of God or through evolution.

Therefore, instincts are behaviors that are inborn. These have come to being individual genetic part through evolution. Nature is developed through constant practice in once lifetime and therefore not a mere habit. An example is the idea of Catholics use of cross. They do not crucify themselves through the instincts; however, they believe this through a constant practice over a period of time turning to be a cultural habit. Through people believing in God, it was supposed that there were instincts that compelled all of them to believe in God or gods (Jones et al 2000). This is seen to be instincts that come up through human nature according to the psychologist. Therefore, this has made religion to be termed as instincts.

According to the number of the people who are religious, suffer from different religious issues that support their instincts. For example, Confucianism, stoicism and Buddhism as religious holds different believes. Confucianism had no God, Stoicism ignores gods and Buddhist is atheist.  Most of the people in especially Unitarian churches in America say that they are Christians although do not have any Gods belief and immortality. Nevertheless, the psychology of these people is no different with that of the Christians.

However, most of the psychologist such as Starbuck remained to believe that religion is instincts that at time misled the society. Some others saw religion as a sublime of the sex instinct.  However, some of them believe that religion has been used as a substitute of some of the instincts whereas itself is not an instinct but a human habit that have based itself in several instincts (Carter & Fleck 1981).

Reason in belief

The process of reasoning has nothing or otherwise little to do with religion. According to psychology, feelings are the main determinant of the beliefs that people have more than the intellects. According to the psychologist, reasons for beliefs are in many cases a rationalization. Through religion, the believers see the world to be in great harmony with their beliefs. Through Christianity they belief that the suffering of the wicked and prosperity of those who are good will be put right in the next world. According to them, they do not doubt about that issue and reasoning is therefore termed as devils temptation.

It evident most of the believers' even if learned do not want to think about religion as it is seen as a devil temptation. That is the reason that makes the preachers to dominate in their preaching even through using their apologetic tone as they slay atheists, modernists and their other religious people will not be asserted by their followers as they speak for God and what they say is perceived to be right (Jones et al 2000). This is through the stream of religion that has been placed in ones mind that flow down their mind and religion making bypass the central point of their mind that is more sensitive.

Emotion

Looking at the belief through tradition and the way it is justified, emotion is taken as a religious practice as a mystical experience. There has a big question that most of the psychologist had been asking about if the religion is a sentiment love. According to psychologist, there may be masochism that is felt through by women who get to see the crucified son.  This is through the weakness of the women who suffer from stigma more than men do. Therefore, women are prone to empathize with their crucified son as they imagine themselves suffering the same innocently. It might be the emotions that a catholic nun has over Jesus might have a subconscious sexual context.

Most of the priest who offer the religious principles do not have steadfast emotions but otherwise barricade their comfort in the mass and the communion service they offer that has less or low religious and sexual meaning. They just have the ordinary emotions of joy, hope, sorrow, fear, reverence and love as any other person. Nevertheless are their emotions about their religion. Otherwise, the emotions that have been attained through religion, they are forced and continued through particular conceptions of gods and goddess that have definite beliefs about life and the  future through different images, ritual, music and hymns that are used in the religious rituals.

Suggestibility

This is a very important aspect f the religious training. Children who have been brought up in a religious community are not taught religion in academic sense; however, they get this through reasoned explanation. They receive their beliefs through suggestion. Submission is a very important mental process that is centrally placed in the psychological understanding. This can be well demonstrated through performance of hypotonic act that one suggests to others leading them act in absurd way. It is very much rooted in religion (Philipchalk, 1988). This can be seen in the meaning that Thouless gave that suggestion are processes of communication that results to realization and acceptance of the ideas which were communicated when they were not acceptable.

Otherwise, people view suggestibility in a different way. This explains the reason why some of them are religious whereas others are not. Suggestibility also varies with sex and age. This means that the children are more suggestible than adults are.  This explains why in the congregation there are more women than men. Suggestibility is increased through hysteria and crowds. Military drills increases suggestible state of their automaton to ensure that they respond to their officers with no any question and with no resistance.

This is the same with the Christian rituals for example revivalist meeting. Religion increases the hypnosis of the crowd through different methods that in turn increase the suggestibility of the people (Carter & Fleck 1981). This is done through varying intensity towards the congregation. This effect is heightened by the size of the crowd, call and response session, hymns that are rhythmic, singing, incense and lightings from the torch and lamps that induce an altered state that can be termed as mild hypnosis.

Christianity and sexuality

According to Schroeder who was an  American Religious Psychology he said that God is love. Schroeder believed that Christianity thought is subjective and personal though enclosed in the doctrine of the super being. In it entire teaching, Christianity has termed sexuality as disgusting and morally wrong except when it is practiced in marriage. This drive makes the adolescent people to be guilty and turn from Christianity to converts.

Sex is essential for the propagation of the generation whereas marriage is only a social custom. To make the matter worse, Christian marriage has just existed for around two thousand years. Then therefore, those who were living before this time lived in sin by God's own design according to the Christian doctrine. Sex in its context is natural whether people chose to have their relationship recognized by the society or by a piece of paper that is offered by influence (Jeeves, 1976).

Sex is not immoral and disgusting as the religious people say, but powerful instinct that drives the people in Christianity. There some of the characteristics that shows the connection of the Christianity to sexuality. The first one being that they commit themselves to religion when sexuality is emerging. Conversion always occurs when sex drive is coming up in the adolescent stage. They obviously increase this through the language that they offer that show many sexual instincts. They disapprove sexuality and advocate chastity to help in suppressing the sexual behaviors. They also incline themselves to revert uncontrolled sexuality in both groups and to individuals whereas religious excitement leads to sexual arousal.

Sexual drive, guilt and control

Since the time Persian sent Ezra with his law to Yehud, western religion have manifested intention control to the people. This has remained as the main platform of social control in the society. Therefore, religion has accepted the idea to condition people to become submissive.

According to Jeeves 1976, Ostow and Sharfstein says that church uses guilt as a way for controlling people for its own purpose and for social benefits as their act as the supreme ruling class. Rulers are very much aware of this and ensure that they attend the church service as a cynical idea to ensure that they become role models. Royalty is paramount in religious practice. They form a platform to practice this. For example, the Church of England is called the British Ruling Class at prayers. This is to ensure that they encourage other people. This brings about social control that is effected by media evangelical gold diggers.

Conclusion

The issue of psychology and Christianity is in many ways contrasting and can only be understand through going through it level headed. The Christianity no matter how much they try to amalgamate science with religion it cannot work. Nevertheless, the religion will always be in constant collision with the psychology, as at its right time, psychology will surpass the instilled beliefs, as they are innate. Therefore, lacking realizing the need of comprehending well about once psychological need, one will always be entangled between the Christianity and the full understanding of once life. Therefore, no matter the Christianity connotation, it obviously good to accept the well being of once natural aspect of living and the instincts that one has in life.
