Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is best defined as a group of various health care practices and products that are generally not used by holders of medical doctor or doctor of osteopathic medicine degree and by healthcare professionals. However, there is no recognized boundary between CAM and traditional medicine, and it may be the case that traditional medicine professionals would recommend CAM practices.
Among the great variety of CAM practices, I believe that meditation would best suit my ideologies and lifestyle. Meditation is best defined as a set of practices that use certain techniques such as specific bodily movements, posture, and dance, to focus the mind and think on not thinking. Many people use meditation to relieve themselves from stress and become calm. The process of meditating calls for relieving oneself from thoughts by becoming fully aware of them. Meditation may help alert awareness of fears that are manifested through specific feelings in the body. I reckon that meditation helps people to promote awareness of the processes that take place inside one’s mind in its connection to the body. There is scientific proof that meditation helps to overcome depression, and prevents brain from shrinking with age. One of the greatest advantages of mediation is that it can be practiced anywhere, and it does not require any specific gear. Any exercise can become dynamic meditation. One can focus on anything, be it a song, a flame, running water, to relieve the stream of thoughts and understand oneself better. Mental health professionals recommend meditation to those who are constantly stressed in their daily lives.
On the other hand, I am convinced that attempts to fill one’s body and mind with some forms of Universal energy are useless. I do not share the belief of Reiki practitioners who simply place one’s hands on a person (or near the patient) healers and persuade that such measures may help this person to become healthier and happier.
