Google arguably is one of the most successful companies in the world as it stands today. Barely two decades have old this giant search engine company grown to develop into a force in order to reckon within as far as the business sector is concerned. Without a doubt, it has outstanding features that give it an unrivalled competitive advantage in as far as the search engine business is concerned. One of these features is its strong organizational culture that puts into consideration all aspects of efficient business operation. This essay aims at observing in a more critical manner these cultures and how they are applied. It also observes their effectiveness, their underlying strengths, and lastly their ability to withstand the test of competition whilst keeping the company in the lead, in its area of operation.

Various cultures help to shape the organization of the company. The OPC analysis criterion is composed of seven major cultures that would be exhibited in any company operating at any level of business and competition. These seven cultures are; detail oriented, people oriented, stable, outcome oriented, aggressive and innovative cultures. In the case of Google, however, five key cultures are clearly highlighted. Firstly, is the team-oriented culture? The information garnered from the passage indicates that the decisions on running the company are not made by single entities but rather in a group manner thereby incorporating elements of group work. The trio of Sergey Brin, Larry Page and Eric Schmidt collectively formulate the management policies while most decisions are made in team groups. Apart from the decision-making issue, other programs such as all employees having to work in an open environment also prove this fact. However, considering the dynamism that has engulfed the world today, this could change considering Page’s sentiments on shared decision-making i.e. "We do pay a price for [shared decision-making], )His appointment as the new CEO could cause a turn of events. This does not, however, mean that other aspects of team work will be shunned. The changes-to-be will probably affect the decision-making process alone. Secondly, there is an innovative culture in existence. This is clearly exhibited in the way it is encouraging its engineers to engage in innovative programs that would help them introduce new products other than the search engine in the face of stiff competition. Apart from this, company also takes into consideration the risking involved with carrying out innovations; a process that boosts the employee’s innovative skills in a big way. This has seen the invention of programs such as Google maps, Google earth and Gmail services.

Thirdly, Google has a people oriented culture that has helped it to develop a large user base as compared to its competitors. They always put the needs of the users first even before their profits. This has led to the users building trust and confidence in them. The people in this case are not only the users/customers but the employees, as well. The company has managed to offer very conducive working environments for its employees leading to a huge reduction in the turnover rates.  Fourthly, the company has in place a strong outcome oriented culture. The company is slowly diversifying its productions to net a larger user base. These new production lines include among others an emailing system (Gmail), Android software and a new social network to counter face book among others. Lastly, the company has a stable culture characterized with bureaucracies in the management sector which have been criticized for yielding counterproductive and unwieldy results. This is majorly traced to the organization structure that has been criticized for being loose. Apart from those cultures, the aggressive culture could also be present albeit in small measures. This can be seen in the way Google is struggling to be on the forefront on all sectors its latest being the social networking to counter Face book. In so doing, the company wants to rival other companies like Face book even in their major domains.

Of all these cultures, it is vital to note that the exact culture embraced by Google is that of being people oriented. Here, the company plays to the rules of its customers who are the ultimate decision makers of its stake anyway. Apart from the users (customers), there also exist its employees who play very important roles in shaping up the company’s position in the business. The major factor here is that it is them who buy the products (users) and produce them too (employees). The success of such companies, I believe, is measured on the size of the user base and the production levels to match the demands. The company’s dedication to these two classes of people is clear right from its mission statement to its actions in as far as these two groups are concerned.

The success of any company would depend entirely on the methods of organizational designs and cultures that they embrace. Google being a large company exhibits this trend too. Google, it applies the people-oriented culture as its basic culture has helped it to be successful. It therefore means that, the ease with which they practice these cultures influence their success. Therefore, the culture brings about success and not the other way. In other cases, however, (though few) a successful company would incorporate certain cultures to be dynamic and competitive. In this case for instance, Google would have incorporated the aggressive and innovative cultures to remain in competition.

Considering Google’s culture has done so much in the attainment of its success it really has to guard it. The measures it has in place include intensifying its hiring process. Employee-to-be is subjected to brain teasing tasks in various levels to ascertain their capabilities. This enables it to hire only the smart people though they have to bear the basic qualities of agility, cooperation and ability to take risks upon which the company is fundamentally instituted. Being a relatively young company its exponential stage of growth, the challenges may seem to be nowhere close.

However, with time challenges must crop up. One likely challenge for instance would be a lack of specialization. In line with its aggressive culture, the company is struggling to compete on many fronts. Though an excellent business, strategy, it will even lose grip of its major stronghold; search engine business. These challenges, however, are unlikely to crop up any time soon considering the company is shaping its cultures in line with the dynamic progressions that are characterizing the contemporary world.
