Almost every nursing student faces academic writing as one of the biggest challenges, but the main thing is not to be dismayed or alarmed. The other nurses have already met that fear before you have even realized how terrifying and challenging this area of academics is.

Being a nursing student suggests your mature understanding of a great amount of work that needs to be done. The excessive amounts of a content that students need to memorize regarding chemistry, math, biology, and anatomy, writing tends somehow to be forgotten and overlooked. But writing as a skill plays not the last role in academic studies, and nursing students should mind that fact. The following tips are meant to serve every nursing student even after graduation.

Tips Every Nursing Student Should Follow

  1. Mind your audience

It’s better to say know the audience, which I’d admit must be titled “you should know your professor.” It goes mainly about the type of writing and favorite style the work needs to be written in. Professors tend to be conservative so the old writing style is truly welcomed. To ensure yourself from the type of writing which isn’t definitely your professor’s favorite one, see the thesis written by your senior students. This way you’ll get the idea of acceptable type of papers, writing styles, and other stuff. Keep in mind the format, as professors sometimes have one for their students. Remember that even having the best thesis in terms of material won’t help if you didn’t follow the benchmark.

  1. Stop worrying, it makes no sense.

You might feel that your academic writing is nothing more than just a piece of garbage. That’s where the writing block starts its existence! The pressure is one of your biggest enemies right now, so please, do your best to get rid of your fears and doubts. Simply start writing. I don’t know any other ways how to beat this writing block. If you prepare your writing beforehand but not at the last minute, you’ve already become a winner, as your ideas will be fresh and well-considered. What is the most successful way to start then? Start preparing your thesis at the beginning of the session. In this manner, you’ll continually get more knowledge and be provided with more and more methods of research and information for your thesis.

  1. Don’t get focused on flowery phrasing, include One’s Self instead.

You definitely shouldn’t try to impress professor with your sentence structure and flowery vocabulary. Those are the things that professors don’t care about at all. Everything they are interested in is your final conclusion, material, research methods, and sources, no matter how plain your English might sound. Set aside your thesaurus and forget about the idea of using flowery phrasing in order to make a better impression.

  1. Step into the Reader’s Shoes

Your writing needs to be clearly understandable, that’s essential. While writing, remind yourself to keep the focus on the simplicity of what exactly you are trying to convey. According to the readers, your writing needs to vary. For doctors and professors, it’s totally okay to understand medical terminology, but for the general public or a patient,  it works another way. Mind that you should change the language and tone, making your thesis as user-friendly as possible.

  1. Limit the use of Passive Voice

It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use Passive Voice, no, no way. The use of passive structures is available; you don’t need to make every single sentence active. You’ll go crazy if you do that! Just try to be more direct as you could be, the main point is to convey your thoughts in the most simple andeasy-to-understand English. Don’t forget that material is the thing you are focused on, not the language.

  1. You do need a Writing Class in University

Unfortunately, but even the best academic writing tips ever won’t teach you everything and make you the best academic writing ever, not even this article I should admit. You do need a writing class in university, believe me. Any class that suggests having an element of teaching academic writing will be definitely useful for any nursing student to improve the particulars of sentence structure- such as grammar.

  1. You need persistence

Perseverance as in any other area is an inevitable thing while you are trying to master something. If you doubt the fact that a nursing student and writing have nothing in common, and just can’t go alongside, like it or lump it, but even a nursing student can have their writing voice. Being a nursing student, you can manage the academic writing. Work on your academic writing paying attention to the way it is improving, try to make it better than it used to be.

The biggest mistake ever is to be afraid of academic writing, claiming that nursing students were born for another purpose, not the writing one for sure. Don’t be dismayed or alarmed, it’s not such a big disaster as you’ve imagined before! The suggested tips above will help you to become an outstanding nursing student, who does cope with academic writing.
